TERN Gallery is pleased to present “FIVE”, an exhibition supporting the work of five emerging Bahamian artists. The exhibiting artists are Brent Fox, Amaani Hepburn, Dyah Neilson, Matthew Rahming, and Keith Thompson. This exhibition aims to highlight the work of painters, sculptors, printmakers, and photographers whose work expands and defies our ideas of “island-life” and pushes our understanding of the limitations of visibility. “FIVE”, the emerging artist exhibition, will be on view from July 28 to August 27, 2022, with an opening reception on Thursday, July 28 at 7 pm.
Ranging from realism to abstraction, the works in this exhibition reflect the artists’ developing practices and experimentations. It also seeks to unearth this grouping’s intersection of experience in a space where most Bahamians are either invisible or hyper-visible in relation to the brand of tropicality that The Bahamas exists in.
Brent Fox
Fox (b. 1997, Nassau, The Bahamas, they/them) is a multimedia artist working in film, graphic design, media production, painting, and photography. Fox’s practice, thematically, centers ideas of masculinity and intimacy.
Amaani Hepburn
Hepburn (b. 2000, Nassau, The Bahamas, she/her) is a painter, photographer and writer who documents and memorializes intimacy within her environment and community. Hepburn’s practice, thematically, explores the relationship between the Caribbean’s natural environment and the people who occupy it and uses the matriarch as a lens for exploring her community and re-examing her own femme identity.
Dyah Neilson
Neilson (b. 1996, Nassau, The Bahamas, she/her) is a painter who uses symbolism in her portraits to explore the complexities of spirituality, relationships and femininity. Neilson’s practice is inspired by nature, natural and social histories, and the symbolism and metaphors that are ingrained in these histories.
Matthew Rahming
Rahming (b. 1997, Nassau, The Bahamas, he/him) is an interdisciplinary artist who discusses themes of agency, conflict, identity, tenderness, and Bahamian ethnography. Rahming’s practice encompasses printmaking, ceramics and sculpture working in materials such as concrete, found-objects, and metal.
Keith Thompson
Keith Thompson (b. 1996, The Bahamas) pursued an Associates of Fine Arts at the University of The Bahamas. Thompson creates work about his experience growing up in a neighborhood rife with crime and gang-culture. By placing these images within a gallery setting, Thompson asks us to look at images that are associated with criminal activity or gang culture with a nuanced perspective.
